Back to Digital Help

Shopping for the digital camera that best suits your needs can be challenging.  Consider the following when doing your shopping…

Ø    A camera with the ability to capture at least 3MP

Ø    Avoid models that require the use of an LCD screen to compose pictures; optical viewfinders are best

Ø    Built-in flashes that cover 7-10 feet are best for indoor pictures

Ø    Glass lens with an optical zoom

Ø    A camera with Macro function is best to capture flowers, jewelry, coins

– a requirement for on-line auction images

Ø    Lens attachment capability for wide angle and close-up options

Ø    Video capability for recording action clips

Ø    Analog video output terminal (NTSC) that allows the connection to a TV

Ø    Check the camera specifications to find the number of pixels that are actually captured by the image sensor (without interpolation).  Sometimes this number is overstated by the manufacturer.

Beyond the cost of the camera, you should consider the cost of a few necessary accessories that will add $75 – $100 to your total cost.

Ø   Extra batteries (preferably rechargeable)

Ø   Additional memory cards (a couple of 64MB cards)
